A Little Bit About Me...

I'm the Founder and Director of MoCADA the Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Art. MoCADA is devoted to utilizing the visual arts as a medium to address, discuss, debate and resolve contemporary social, political and economic issues that disproportionately affect the people of the African diaspora through the creation of innovative exhibitions, public programs, community outreach initiatives and educational interactive tours. The experiences and cultural contributions of people of African descent have been grossly marginalized throughout history. MoCADA’s mission is to undertake the responsibility of rewriting this history in order to give a more accurate portrayal of contributions to the historical, artistic and cultural landscape of the world by people of African descent.

This year we are celebrating our 10th anniversary with a number of exciting events, including book signings, and our amazing exhibition titled They Won't Budge: Africans in Europe. Set to begin a European tour in 2010, the exhibition will show Brooklyn residents examples of photographic narratives on widely diverse African communities living throughout Europe. These remarkable photographs capture Europe’s postcolonial residents – old and young, male and female, healthy and disabled, Pentecostal Christians, Coptic Christians and Muslim Murids – as they negotiate their citizenship within and against multiple political and cultural spaces. Vivid, intimate, and often unexpected, these images portray the many ways in which Africans claim migration and fundamental human rights despite centuries old prejudices usually invoked to limit their realities.

We are located at 80 Hanson Place at South Portland in Downtown Brooklyn, near the Brooklyn Academy of Music. You can take the 2, 3, 4, 5, B, and Q stop at Atlantic Avenue, the D, M, N, and R stop at Pacific Avenue, the C stop at Lafayette Avenue OR the G stop at Fulton Street. Admission is only $5 for adults, $4 for students (with valid ID) and seniors. It's totally free for children 12 and under. Our hours of operation are Wednesday – Sunday, 11am to 7pm. Come for a visit!
